Intro
In the rustic fantasy game Legend in the Mist, your character is limited only by what you imagine – and the Frame of Play your group decided on. You can play humble heroes venturing out of their village for the first time. You could also play mysterious mages, or mighty monstrosities. Whatever Hero you play, here is how you create them.
Recap: Hero Makeup
In our first video, we covered how every Hero is made up of four themes that represent their main aspects. Each theme begins with three power tags, one weakness tag, and a Quest your Hero chooses to follow. You also have a backpack that carries the story tags you pick up on your journeys, which starts with one story tag.
You record your Hero’s details on a Legend In The Mist character sheet, which consists of a Hero card and four theme cards, available for download at sonofoak.com.
There are three ways to create your Hero.
Simple Character Creation
The simple way is to just come up with all of their tags. Your Hero’s tags are just words, so you could make their tags by describing their qualities, abilities, background, resources, allies, and gear. You don’t need to study a bunch of rules about abilities - if you want your Hero to be able to cast fireballs just add a tag, fireball.
But maybe you want some more guidance.
Quick (5-min) Character Creation
The quick 5-minute way to make a Hero is to browse through the corebook’s many tropes, which are like recipes for a Hero, and pick one. If you want to play a dashing swashbuckler, there’s a trope for that! Each trope points you to three theme kits, and asks you to choose your fourth one out of three options.
Each theme kit is a premade list of tags: Simply take the kit’s title tag, choose two more power tags, pick a weakness tag, copy its Quest, and you have a theme! Each trope also has three examples of story tags you could pack in your backpack theme.
Detailed Character Creation
The third and most detailed way to create a Hero is by filling out themebooks, which are questionnaires where your answers to the questions become your tags. Each theme type has a themebook. For example, if you want your character’s heritage, culture, or species to be important, you would choose the People themebook. Each themebook then has power tag questions, weakness tag questions, and Quest ideas to get you started.
For your power tags, first answer Question A for your title tag, which is the main focus of your theme. Then, choose two more questions to answer for your two other power tags. Once you have those, choose one weakness tag question to answer. Finally, come up with a Quest that’s important for your character to follow.
Once you’ve done this for your four themes, all that remains is to pick a story tag for your backpack by perusing the General Store, which has a list of items and other tags you can use.
Fellowship Creation
If you’re traveling alone, that’s all you need for your Hero. But if you’re traveling in a group, there’s a bit more to determine.
Every party shares a Fellowship theme, which has its own tags that can be used by all Heroes in their actions. Just like your Hero themes, it consists of a title tag, two more power tags, a weakness tag, and a Quest. But unlike your Hero’s power tags, Fellowship power tags are single-use. Once they’re invoked to support an action, they’re scratched out and can no longer be used until they’re recovered. This does not include the weakness tag, which can be used multiple times as usual.
While this theme covers your group as a whole, each Hero also has Fellowship relationship tags. These are single-use story tags that each Hero has for each other Hero, describing their relationship whether good or bad. Every time you camp, you are encouraged to update them based on your Hero’s relationship with the other Hero.
Outro
And that’s it! Once you have four themes, a story tag in your backpack, and a Fellowship theme with your relationship tags, your Hero is ready for their journey!
